Today we had our Happy Birthday Alex Venis jam in downtown Toronto (actually at Buskerfest, where Jorden usually performs). Attendance was something like:
-Adam Greenwood
-Andrew Langstaff
-Jay Boychuk (from Hamilton)
-Cassy Taylor (from Oshawa)
-Alex Venis (studying in Vancouver)

And I finally met this mystery Pole of whom I've heard spoken on Modified of late. I didn't even catch his name, but it sounded like, "Vasek"... I dunno. There's something about Polish footbag players and not smiling. I'm sure he's a nice enough guy, but it just really rubs me the wrong way. I felt super awkward around the Poles at Steve's house in San Francisco too (speaking of which, I HAVE started a write-up.. I just need to get around to continuing). They are just too confident and cool... to smile? I found that very different with players like Michal B, and Damian, and Olaf -- nice quieter, smiley guys. Anyhooo.. I don't know this guy's name, but he's good. Toronto is lucky, and I'm not sure they know it?? He was laying whirring swirls both sides, blurry whirling swirl both sides, ripsteins BSOS like nothing. Lots of spenders and food processors and bedwetters and such. Cool stuff.

Jay is like the new Jorden. He is just a pleasure to watch, as everything is fresh, tight, and hardcore. Vortex swirl like nothing. Alpine Smoke both sides for the first time (Derek actually invented this, and named it "Pot". I was there (don't let Honza tell you otherwise :p)) What CAN'T Jay do? It always seems that he has handfuls of his own inventions to show off.

I did some neat things, but overall I had a really crap session. I think I only played really bad in the circle with the Polish guy and Jay, though. As soon as I stepped into a circle with Cassy and Adam I was ripping. I had trouble getting past 5 contacts, like, all afternoon... Though when I did it was pretty good for me. I BSOSed Bling Blang for the first time to open a nice run. It was probably spinning reverse whirl > PS rev whirl BSOS.. I don't know. I had a run with vortex BSOS and then the same spinning rev > ps rev later on too. I was very happy to find vortex not too difficult, which is another cool low-impact trick I can add to a new repertoire I must rebuild (I'm thinking of eliminating pixie sets from my arsenal...) I ended the session with some solo stuff on the side in my frustration. Spender on one side (the other was being sucky?), scorpion's tail both sides.. and other stuff.

All-in-all it was fun. I hope we have a jam in Oshawa soon.
